By Malvika Shrimali: River herring is the collective name for alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) and blueback herring (Alosa aestivalis). They are found throughout Virginia’s history—both ecological and cultural! Scientists at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center are exploring the biology and spatial distribution of river herring. At SERC, scientists are developing maps to understand how land use changes affect herring migrations. This StoryMap adds to that research to explore how river herring have made an impact to Virginian cultures.
